So I don't smoke, but I seem to have been painting a lot of girls lately who do - Let's face it, those anti-smoking ads lie; yes, it may ruin your lungs, but it totally does increase your coolness levels by at least 10%. We can pretend it's a Spaceman candy stick if it makes you feel better. Although the format of this work is reminiscent of a religious icon or votive painting, obviously Miss Flamingo of the Ink is not your average Virgin Mary. Tattoos, cigarette smoke and fairy lights stand in for the more traditional devotional trappings of stained glass, incense and candles, and fashion-wise, a black bandana is the new blue mantle, with roses replacing any thorns as her crown. Speaking of crowns, I reckon this lass and my girl from 'Queen of the Crown' would get on marvelously over a few beers; to continue the awesome Dunedin drinking places theme, perhaps she can be the patron Saint of Alley Cantina?
